Minister of Fisheries Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says that you cannot develop a country by protecting political parties. The minister stated that when he crossed over to the government back in 2007, with a group of UNP MPs, they did not request for ministerial portfolios.
He however stated that they took up the positions after the President convinced them that failure to do so would give the UNP a chance to revoke their position as members of parliament and this would result in the government being toppled.
He reminds the public that the government won the budget vote in 2007 by four votes even after 17 members crossed over to the government. The minister revealed that he was approached by the UNP during this time and was offered the position of UNP deputy leader and several ministerial portfolios of his choice if he opted to rejoin the UNP once again and help topple the government.
The minister made these statements during a function held to declare open a reconstructed mosque in the Dharga town area in Aluthgama.
