Minister of Special Projects and Deputy Minister of Economic Development S.M. Chandrasena stressed the need to continue with the Executive Presidential System.
The minister made this remark at at a media briefing held in Colombo on Wednesday.
The Executive Presidency was created by the UNP through a 5/6th majority in Parliament. Parliamentarians who assisted in the creation of this system, are serving the current Parliament. They have forgotten this fact. When losing – this system is bad, but when winning – this system is good. We were against the Executive Presidency for sometime.
If we did not have the Executive Presidency we would not have been able to wipe out Prabakaran or even terrorism. Though we have defeated terrorism, the notion still exists. In order to establish permanent peace or democracy in the country, there is a need for the executive presidency to be effective for sometime. The Executive Presidency should exist until separatism and LTTE terrorism are eradicated. No harm has been created to the country through this system. We can discuss abolishing of this system when the country is more stable and the notion regarding the LTTE is diminished.
