Two police officers have been assaulted in the Arachchikattuwa area in Chilaw.

Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana said that the police officers were attacked by the occupants of a house and their neighbours when they tried to raid a house in the area

SSP Rohana added that two individuals from the area who were allegedly assaulted by the two police officers are receiving treatment in hospital.

One of the individuals who were attacked by the police officers recounted the story,

“My daughter had come home at around 7. She then saw two people asleep on two chairs. She screamed. Then they demanded that the house door be opened saying they are from the police. My daughter refused to open it saying that she is the only one at home. They had then said not to worry, they are from the police and demanded that the door be opened. My daughter then called her brother and told him to come quickly. Then I came and I asked them who they were and they replied saying they are from the police and wanted to check my house. I asked them why. They said that there is arrack and toddy and they wanted to check my house. I said ‘Sir we we live here on rent and there isn’t anything like that. They then asked me how dare I say there isn’t anything inside and started beating the two of us. We begged and pleaded them not to hit us, but they did it anyway.”

Another individual  also claims he was beaten by the police said,

“You can barely tell they are from the police because even a beggar wouldn’t dress like that. While beating us they took a pistol out as well, that’s when we got to know who they were. They seemed quite drunk and could not walk straight. While they were beating us I managed to scream for help, it was then that the rest of the villagers came to the scene. There was a bottle of arrack hung on the handle of the bike. The rest of villages got together and beat them up.”

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that investigations have been launched into the incident.
