Days after a cartoon published in the New York Times on India’s Mars Orbiter Mission created a controversy, the leading US daily apologised saying the intent of the cartoonist was only to highlight how space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries.
The cartoon, illustrated by Singapore based cartoonist Heng Kim Song, had shown India with a cow knocking on the ‘Elite Space Club’.
The daily’s official Facebook page had flooded with comments from Indians expressing anger over the cartoon and accusing the paper of promoting racism.
The paper clarified that the cartoonist was in no way trying to impugn India, its government or its citizens.
