Water cannons have been used to disperse student protesters at the Sabaragamuwa University in Pambahinna. Several students were conducting a Sathyagraha campaign, which has been underway for the past month.
Tensions rose when the demonstrators turned their attention and addressed their demands to the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake, who was at the university to declare open a new Ladies hostel.
Police were then called and water cannons were used to disperse demonstrators. However, our correspondent in the area states that the protesters are yet to be fully dispersed and tensions in the area remain high.
