The Administration of the Sabaragamuwa University, decided on Sunday to close the campus until further notice. The closure was prompted by female students forcing their way into the Men’s Hostel.

A tense situation has prevailed at the Sabaragamuwa University since Sunday morning.

The Minister of Higher Education who was to declare open a women’s hostel at the campus on Sunday was accosted by a group of students at the Pambahinna Junction en route, whence they asked the Minister to resolve their demands.

These students have been holding a Sathyagraha campaign  for 24 days. A special police security detail was deployed at the university as a result of the Minister’s visit.

The students did not allow Minister S.B. Dissanayake to proceed to the campus and staged a demonstration,  blocking the road. Riot police fired water cannons to disperse the students and clear a path for the Minister.

Although the Minister did eventually enter the campus and declare open the hostel, none of the students attended the event. Students remained at the Pambahinna junction awaiting the Minister’s return.

However, following the event at the campus, the Minister used an alternate route and avoided the students at the junction.
