Lightning-related deaths reach 25 as six more lives are lost

Twenty five persons have been killed as a result of lightning strikes so far this year.

The Disaster Management Centre noted that six persons have died due to lightning-related accidents over the past few days .

Four persons including two women were killed by lightning at an estate in Paladupalla, Morawaka on Wednesday.

Our correspondent in the area said that another woman in critical condition was rushed to the Morawaka Hospital and was later transferred to the Matara General Hospital.

It has been reported that a group of employees at the estate had sought shelter from the rain at a Police said that the lightning strike took place when one person attempted to make a phone call via a mobile phone.

One of the victims was a thirty-seven-year-old father of two, Lewkondheniyage Amitharatne. A field officer by profession, he met with the tragedy on his first day of work at the estate.

Two other victims, forty-year-old Marimuthu Ganesan and Shanmugam Ariyawathi were a couple with one child. The fourth victim of the tragedy was twenty-five-year-old Kanthasamy Wasanthi.
