The Teachers and Principals Trade Union Collective charges that the government is defrauding the salary arrears of government teachers.

Convener of the Collective Teachers and Principals Trade Union Mahinda Jayasinghe shared these views:

“According to government figures there are 219,000 teachers in the country. Some of these teachers are individuals who have been newly appointed. However a majority of the teachers are facing a serious issue with regard to promotions. The last promotions were given to teachers in December 2012, it has been four years and a majority of the 219,000 teachers have been become stagnant in one position.”

He added:”The other problem that they are facing is the non payment of salary arrears. In addition, nearly 15,000 principals have not been granted promotions since 2008. What we have seen in the past is that when salary arrears accumulates the government is unable to pay it and as a result they defraud this money. This is a serious issue ..”
