Suspect Kalu Chooty mother speaks out about his death in police custody

Hiran Darshana alias “Kalu Chooty” who was arrested by the police in connection with several crimes, was killed in police fire in Colombo early Sunday morning.

Police say that the suspect was being transported for further investigation when he had tussled with the officers prompting them to open fire. The suspect was shot at about 6:05 a.m. today on Reid Avenue in Colombo.

The suspect was arrested at about 9 p.m. last night in the Devolapola area in Gampaha by officers of the Mirihana Sepcial Crimes Division. Based on information revealed by the suspect, the police had come to Torrington to arrest another murder suspect.

Police say that although steps were taken to bring the suspect to the National Hospital in Colombo, he was already dead.

The mother of the deceased expressed following views:

“The police were always saying that they would kill him and in the end they did. Now that my son is gone, there is not point in me saying anything about anyone.”

The police say that the suspect was connected to three recent murders that took place in Sinhapura, Kolonnawa. Police added that the suspect has also been charged with the hacking to death of a police sergeant in Wellampitiya.

Police say that the suspect, Hiran Dharshana alias Kalu Chooty, is also connected to the illegal drug trade.
