Police Headquarters says that steps have been taken to beef up security in the Uva Province. Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana says that these steps are being taken to ensure that the environment required for a free and fair election is in place.

While police are beefing up security in the province, another incident of election violence was reported from Uraniya in Mahiyanganaya. An unidentified group had attacked several JVP campaigners in the Uraniya area early Monday morning.

Our reporter says the attack occurred when the campaigners were putting up posters with regard to a JVP election rally for which authorisation had been obtained. The victims claim that their attackers had abducted them and tortured them.

Two UPFA campaigners who claim to have been injured in the incident which occurred on Monday morning have also been admitted to the Uraniya Hospital.

There are only five days left for the Uva Provincial Council poll. Incidentally, a cycling race was held in the Moneragala town on Monday morning. The event had been organised by a group of campaigners for a UPFA candidate for the Uva Provincial Council poll.
