The Mawbima newspaper quoting UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera, reported on Thursday that the MP had said that the colour and symbol of the UNP should be forgotten.
Party supporters have expressed extreme displeasure with the MP’s statement.
If a person says that the party colour and symbol should be changed he must be an incurable fool.

A person who says the party colour and symbol should be changed cannot be right in the head. If the party is to become victorious then the colour of the party and the elephant symbol are a necessity.

We cannot win without the colour green.

I say that there is a problem with regard to his intelligence.

If that happens the same fate that befell him will befall the UNP. I believe that he has gotten into our party and is working against it as a last resort.
The Mawbima newspaper reported yesterday, that MP Mangala Samaraweera had said during a media briefing at the UNP Headquarters, Sirikotha, that there is no need for the Elephant or the colour Green.
A member of the UNP Leadership Council, and the Head of the Party’s Communications Brigade, MP Mangala Samaraweera, convened this media briefing, following a trip to London which lasted from August 3 to September 7.
The Mawbima newspaper also reported that MP Mangala Samaraweera had participated in several secretive meetings while in London.
Former UNP General Secretary Daham Wimalasena notes, that never in the 68 year history of the United National Party founded by Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake, has attention been turned towards changing the party colour and the elephant symbol.
Former UNP General Secretary, Daham Wimalasena expressed these views:
I was appointed the UNP General Secretary in 1975 and in 1977. I played a role in that major victory where we won five sixths of the seats. We achieved that victory under the Elephant symbol and the colour Green. At present, Mangala Samaraweera is saying that the symbol and the colour must be changed for the party to be victorious. That is not something that can ever be done and neither is there a need to do it. It is this symbol and the colour Green that has been ingrained in the people and the party faithful. They have a major bond with this symbol and the colour. There is no political party in Sri Lanka that has ever changed its symbol or colours. Let us take a look at Mr. Samaraweera’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Their symbol is still the Hand and their colour is still Blue. The other thing is, who is Mangala Samaraweera to speak of these things? He is not a person that has any right to speak of these things.
Attorney-at-Law Gunaratne Wanninayake shared these thoughts;
Mangala Samaraweera is the person who dismantled the UNP government in 2002 and assassinated the character of Ranil Wickremesinghe. In the sixty eight year history of the United National Party, UNP supporters have never assaulted another party supporter. But he carried out this malicious act by assaulting UNP supporters with cinnamon poles. We wish to state with responsibility to the UNP faithful, and make the clear statement, that we cannot allow these persons who destroyed the UNP, to sneak into the home of the UNP and rant away. We cannot allow these Devadattas and Judas’ to destroy the party again. Mangala Samaraweera became a political orphan by jumping from branch to branch. He is an individual who has destroyed every place that he has been in. I do not know whether he is speaking out of his mouth or anywhere else. People who spew out nonsense like this must have their heads examined.
