TNA Parliamentary Group Leader R. Sampanthan stated that the next round of discussions between the government and the TNA to resolve the issues faced by the people of the northern and eastern provinces should conclude within six weeks.

Speaking to News1st, Sampanthan expressed the following views:

“Discussions between the Sri Lankan Government and the TNA have been continuing for over a year. Discussions were halted by the Sri Lanka Government: not the TNA. We are ready to engage in discussions at any given time. However, these discussions should be based on trust and should be meaningful. These discussions should not be conducted merely to hoodwink the international community. These discussions should have a definite time-frame . “

He added: “We have been engaging in discussions about these issues for the past 60 years. We have documented proof of these discussions. that is why we state the next round of discussions should end within a particular time frame. We believe that discussions should conclude within six weeks. We believe that an international presence would aid in spreading the decisions reached through these discussions. This would also provide evidence as to how these discussions took place. We are ready to engage in discussions.”
