Water supply to several areas was disrupted on Sunday as a result of a sudden breakdown in the water main leading from the Ambatale Water Purification Centre.

The breakdown had occurred near the Polduwa Bridge in Battaramulla. This water main carries 5700 cubic metres of water per hour to several areas in Colombo.

Incidentally, the water supply to these areas was disrupted for 62 hours recently owing to maintenance work on this pipeline. As a result, questions arose with regard to the standard of the work that was carried out at this location.

The suspicion is given further weight when considering what an official who inspected the breakdown, had to say when informing the authorities.

“Sir, the water supply has been switched off. A track around the pipe is worn out. There has been no welding in some locations. It will have to be welded to fix it. I believe it will be very difficult.”

Speaking regard to the incident, the Deputy GM (Products) of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Ranjith Perera said:

“We are looking into what happened here. It will take some time to determine what exactly happened. Once we find out we will be able to restore the pipeline within an hour or two.”
