The wholesale prices of several vegetables which stood at more than Rs.100 per kilogram, have reduced to between Rs.30 and Rs.40 per kilogramme.

The Dambulla Economic Centre Traders Association points out that the price for some types of vegetable including pumpkin and cucumber, is close to Rs.10 per kilogram.

Vegetables being discarded at the Dambulla Economic Centre, are varieties that were selling at more than Rs.200 per kilogramme a month ago.The stocks are being discarded owing to excess supply at the Dambulla Economic Centre.

President of Dambulla Economic Centre Traders’ Association, Shantha Ekanayake said:

[quote]Since the prices were very high about two to three months ago, the farmers started cultivating even more. Cucumber and pumpkin grow in about 40 days. They produced these vegetables and now there is excess supply at the Dambulla Economic Centre. All the other vegetables that were selling at over Rs.100 are now being sold at Rs.30 to Rs.40 at the economic centre.[/quote]
