Man who set himself on fire in Colpetty dies – details revealed

The man who who set himself fire in front of the Colpetty Police Station on Tuesday, has died while receiving treatment for his severe burns.

After being admitted to the Emergency Ward of the Colombo National Hospital, the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that the individual had been in critical condition with burn injuries  over 80 percent of his body.

The deceased was identified as a 72-year old resident of Pannipitiya. Police say the man was an army veteran who had served for  twenty one years. The police and people at the scene at the time had made a concerted effort to rescue him on Tuesday morning.

The police then used a patrol vehicle to rush him to the National Hospital. Meanwhile, police stated that the individual had made a statement to the police before his death, saying that he set himself on fire as a sign of protest against the Former United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Navi Pillay.
