The Sirasa Shakthi Sahana Yathra convoys, carrying much-needed aid for the two million drought stricken people of Sri Lanka, are nearing the end of their journey.
It is our intention to bring the donations made by you directly to the people who need it.
Multi-faith religious observances were held at the MTV/MBC Head Office at Braybrooke Place, Colombo 02, on Sunday morning, to invoke blessings on the Sirasa Shakthi Sahana Yathra initiative prior to the departure of the aid convoys.
Lorries were overflowing with donations made by the general public at the MTV/MBC Head Office in Colombo 2, the MTV/MBC Studio Complex in Depanama, Pannipitiya, and at Stein Studios in Ratmalana.
The aid packages include rice, dhal, milk powder, canned fish and water. These donations have been packaged into individual dry ration packages for each individual family in drought-stricken areas.
Three (3) aid convoys made their way towards three areas that are worst hit. One convoy travelled along Galle Road to Matara from where it was to travel to Ampara via Kataragama.
The aid convoy was further strengthened by donations made by members of the public who gathered on either side of the Galle Road.
Meanwhile, the aid convoy which departed from the MTV/MBC Head Office in Colombo 2 is expected reach Kilinochchi via Puttalam and Anuradhapura, commencing its journey on the Negombo road.
People who gathered on either side of the route long before the convoy made it to their areas, added their contributions to strengthen the aid mission and extend a helping hand to their fellow Sri Lankans in need.
The aid donated by the good samaritans of the country to help the more than two million people affected by the drought will be distributed on Sunday August 31 and Monday September 1.
In the near future we will bring to you footage of this event and the expression of gratitude of people who benefited from your generosity. The MTV/MBC network wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all the unsung heroes who contributed towards making this timely venture a success.
A second large aid convoy is making its way towards Polonnaruwa, one of the worst-affected drought stricken districts. The convoy of lorries received a warm response as it made its way along the Kandy Road to Kurunegala and then onto Polonnaruwa.
Members of the public further strengthened the aid mission, adding their donations to the already substantial aid packages. It is our intention to deliver these aid packages directly to the hands of drought-affected people in the Polonnaruwa district.
