Chairman of India’s BJP Strategic Action Committee, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, says that Sri Lanka should grant Indian fishermen permits to fish in Sri Lankan waters, until fish in Indian waters can be repopulated.

He made this statement at the Defence Seminar 2014, which concluded in Colombo on Wednesday.
Now the question is the poor fishermen (Indians) are not able to catch good fish. Due to wreckless fishing in the Indian side…..on the Gulf of Mannar all our quality fish and shrimps have been exhausted. They have been already fished out. Now, the good fish export value fish and shrimp – they are all on the Sri Lankan side. So, therefore, our fishermen have been coming , compelled by the boat owners to go across to Sri Lanka and then fish there. Otherwise, they will not be able to export and they will not be able to collect enough to cover the cost of fuel of those boats. We have to sit down with Sri Lanka and say give us three years to repopulate our side of the ocean, And in between you give us some permits to fish in your side. There is not a single Indian fishermen in the jails of Sri Lanka. If they are there, they are on the way out to bail and return back to India .
