A tense situation arose between two farming communities who have been battered by the drought, with regard to problems in water distribution in the Hambantota area.
The parties in question were from the lower Andaraweva and the Dimuthugama villages . Farming communities in the lower Andaraweva and Dimuthugama villages in Hambantota rely on water from the Mal Aara for their water requirements
Farmers from Andarawewa charged that the farmers of Dimuthugama had blocked the Mal Aara and have been obtaining water using pipes.
Thereafter, irrigation officers and police took measures to re-open the canal by removing the obstructions as well as the pipelines that were installed amidst much protest from the farmers of Dimuththugama.
