Ninety four (94) Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody were handed over to Indian authorities on Saturday in line with the Indian Independence day.
Navy Media Spokesperson Kosala Warnakulasooriya noted that the fishermen were handed over to Indian Coast Guard authorities, off the coast of Kankesanthurai and Talaimannar.
The fishermen from the Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam and Puthukottai areas in Tamil Nadu had been arrested recently for violating the Sri Lankan Maritime Boundary.
The fishermen were released based on a directive by the President, in line with the Independence Day of India.
