Police in Matale have seized an elephant calf that was being illegally transported from Kandy.

The police say that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The elephant calf that was being transported in a truck was taken into the custody of the police in the Matale Fort area.

Director General of Wildlife H.D. Ratnayake noted that the young pachyderm had been entrusted to wildlife officials by the police. He said the calf had been taken to the Giritale Wildlife Office for further examination.

While Newsfirst has reported on several instances in the past on the illegal transportation of elephant calves, environmentalists point out that it has later been revealed that these are calves that are captured within protected reserves.
