Secretary General of SAARC, Arjun B. Thapa met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House in Kandy on Monday, August 11.
According to the Presidential Media Unit, President Rajapaksa had stated that Sri Lanka hopes to participate in the SAARC Summit which is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal on November 18..
This is incidentally the first trip to Sri Lanka undertaken by Arjun B. Thapa after assuming the mantle of SAARC Secretary General.
The Secretary General had briefed the President on the preparations being made ahead of the SAARC Summit and also informed the President of ongoing activities related to the development of the region.
The Presidential Media Unit also noted that President Rajapaksa proposed two specific initiatives for consideration by SAARC member countries. The President had stressed the importance of SAARC organising a youth forum to bring together youth in the region and also proposed a programme to develop a circuit that would promote connectivity with regard to religious and cultural places of interest in the SAARC region.
The discussion between the President and the Secretary General also focussed on how SAARC could establish itself as a contributor to the economic prosperity not only in South Asia but also in the international arena.
