The officer in charge of the Special Investigations Unit of the Colombo Excise Department has been arrested on charges of alleged bribery.
Director of Investigations of the Commission to investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption SSP Sarath Somaweera Lokuge said that the officer had allegedly accepted a bribe to not to take the necessary legal measures against an individual who was producing toddy illegally.
The excise officer is reported to have demanded a Rs.500,000 bribe from the toddy producer and obtained 450,000 of that sum. He was taken in to custody while obtaining the rest of the money amounting to Rs.50,000 on the afternoon of August 4.
