Chief Prelate of the Asgiri chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddarakitha Thero says that steps are being taken to destroy the budda sasanaya.

The chief prelate made this statement during a function held in Matale on August 3 to mark the 119th all island Sunday School Day event.

The chief guest at the event, which was held at the cultural centre auditorium in Matale, was prime minister D.M. Jayaratne.

Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddarakitha Thero expressed following views:

“A letter was sent to the central provincial council. It states that if the council is ready to pay a specific sum, the council could take over the temple legally. A group of theros from the Kurunegala district also stated that same thing. Is this a program,e by the government to develop the sasanaya or to destroy it ? Since 1815, the state is legally obliged to protect and nurture the budda sasanaya. We can see at present the government is engaged in a plan to destroy the budda sasanaya.”

Parliamentarian Rohana Dissanayake and the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs explained about the issue to the Mahanayake Thero.

The prime minister addressed the gathering thereafter.

“The Mahanayake Thero can say anything he wants to. Sometimes they even say wrong things for their benefit. Our people need to be careful because of this.”
