Muslims the world over celebrate Ramadan today. The festival also known as Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated during the month of Ramadan, having concluded a month of fasting, leading up to the sighting of the new moon.

Devotees of Islam observe a month long fast and it is only after the sighting of the new moon that the Festival of Ramadan is declared.

Numerous religious observances were held in mosques across the country today. Large crowds of devotees thronged to the Grand Mosque in Colombo on Tuesday morning to participate in a special prayer session.

Prayers were also held at the Dewatagaha Mosque to mark the Ramadan festival. This is the manner in which devotees were seen engaging in prayers in Galle Face, Colombo on Tuesday morning. Please see video.
