West Indies spinner Sunil Narine became the first bowler in T20 cricket history to bowl a maiden in a super over.

The game was Red Steel versus Guyana Amazon Warriors of the Caribbean Premier League at Providence on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the Dwayne Bravo-led Red Steel franchise removed the words ‘Trinidad & Tobago’ from their name on a minister’s request.

But the name change did not prove lucky for the team. The scores were tied after the stipulated 20 overs a side, with Red Steel 118/8 and Guyana Amazon Warriors at 118/9. And then, the Steels came up against the wily spin of Sunil Narine.

The Warriors batted first in the one-over eliminator and set a target of 12 runs to win in sex balls for the Steels. And then, this is what happened:

Ball one: Right-arm off spinner Sunil Narine to left-handed batsman N Pooran – No run, ball pitches outside leg stump and spins a foot away from Pooran’s off stump. The batsman swings and misses

Ball two
: Sunil Narine to N Pooran – No run, this one skids and doesn’t bounce much. Same length. Another play and a miss. Wicket-keeper take off the bails, but no harm done

Ball three
: Sunil Narine to N Pooran – No run, Three in a row of the same line and length, Narine is firing them in. Dwayne Bravo shakes head in the pavillion

Ball four: Sunil Narine to N Pooran – No run, fourth time. Same hoick, same play and a miss

Ball five: Sunil Narine to N Pooran – OUT, Pooran finally connects but is caught by Martin Guptill at long off. The Warriors cannot lose from here. Steel need 12 from one ball.

Ball six
: Sunil Narine to Ross Taylor – No run. Taylor gets down on his knee to slog it on the on side, misses. It’s a maiden.
