The US State Department has issued a statement raising concerns regarding the freedom of expression of NGOs in Sri Lanka.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki in her statement notes that the United States is concerned by reports that the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence has ordered registered Non-Government Organisations and civil society groups to cease their media engagements and activities.
Jen Psakia says that this order undermines Sri Lanka’s long-standing and proud democratic traditions, including the freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
The United States strongly urges the Government of Sri Lanka to allow civil society organisations and NGOs , which play a vital role in supporting Sri Lanka’s democratic values to operate freely.
