Sri Lanka suffers bitter defeat by South Africans in first ODI

South Africa recorded a comprehensive 75 run victory over Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, today.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first the South Africans posted a mammoth total of 304 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.

After losing their first 2 wickets for 60 runs, captain A.B. de Villiers and Hashim Amla put on a 3rd wicket stand of 151 runs.

de Villiers was eventually dismissed for 75 runs while Hashim Amla batted scored 109, incidentally his 13th ODI hundred.

Ajantha Mendis bagged 3 for 61 for Sri Lanka.

Chasing a target a of 305, the hosts got on to a decent start when openers Kusal Perera and T.M. Dilshan put on a stand of 50 runs.

However Kusal Perera was dismissed for 34 runs while Dilshan was caught behind for 40.

Rising for the occassion yet was Kumar Sangakkara who scored 88 off 83 deliveries for his 86th ODI half century.

Sri Lanka continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bundled out for 229 runs in 40.3 overs.

 

Sri Lanka will meet the South Africans again on July 9 at the Pallekelle Stadium in Kandy.
