It has been reported that a group of students from the Rajarata University have taken hostage the vice-chancellor and a group of lecturers within the University premises.

Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Ranjith Wijewardena, speaking to News 1st, expressed the following views:
A new batch of students were enrolled for the Management Faculty. While we were taking part in the event, a group of students surrounded the hall. They held us hostage for around three hours. They caused harm to some of the lectures at that time. I too was injured. The students called for a dialogue and I agreed. They requested that the suspensions imposed on all students be removed and all conditions be made void. We told that we will remove the suspensions. I told them to apologise, because on previous occasions, when students apologised we lifted the suspension. They did not want to apologise. They are attempting to do this by force. Around 10 lecturers are being held hostage at the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
