The family of Tiarna Middleton held the special ceremony just before the brave tot died following heart problems.
Dressed in a frilly white christening gown, baby Tiarna Middleton’s last hours gave her a chance to be just like any other little girl.
Just hours before she passed away at in hospital, baby Tiarna was christened with her family around her.
The special ceremony was a chance for her mum Sharney to hold her for the first time and to see her dressed in the clothes she had picked out for her, without the tangle of wires and tubes that had surrounded her hospital bed.
Tiarna became the youngest and smallest baby in the world to be fitted with a Berlin heart by a surgeon at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle after being diagnosed with hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS).
Her coronary arteries had also failed to form in the womb.
It was hoped that the artificial heart would buy her vital time until a heart donor could be found for a transplant and she underwent the operation at just 12 days old.
However after complications with her lungs six days later, her health declined rapidly and the family and doctors met to decide to turn her life support machine off.
Mum Sharney said: “She opened her eyes and looked at me and I think it was her saying to me ‘just give up now mam’. It was the worst experience when they turned it off. She just looked at us with a little smile on her. She was so cute.”
She was christened in the hospital ceremony at 4pm on June 9 and was given two god parents, Sharney’s brother Ryan Gray and cousin Donna Gray.
Medics turned off her life support four and a half hours later with her wearing her full length white christening gown.
