The National STD/AIDS Control Programme says that steps have been taken to subject all pregnant mother to the HIV test.
Director of the Programme Doctor Sisira Liyanage said the main objective of this move is to prevent the baby from contracting HIV from the mother.
He further said that six babies were saved from such a risk of HIV transmission last year.
According to the Director , the transmission of HIV from the mother to the baby can be prevented through medication if the mother is found to be HIV positive during the first trimester of pregnancy.
