The Government Medical Officers Association has decided to shut down the Kotagala Medical Officers’ Office until further notice.

The GMOA says this step was taken owing to an incident where the General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers Congress — Minister Arumugam Thondaman — is alleged to have threatened the Divisional Medical Officer.

The GMOA charges that Minister Arumugam Thondaman had threatened the Kotagala Divisional Medical Officer Janath Abeygunawardane at a disaster management meeting held in the area last week.

Meanwhile, a group including the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress Minister Muththu Sivalingam, staged a demonstration in the area Saturday demanding the removal of the medical officer in question.
