Following heavy rains Thursday, the Kalu Ganga has overflowed in Ratnapura, inundating several low-lying Grama Niladari divisions, including Kuruwita, Kiriella and Elpatha.
Speaking to Newsfirst, Nimal Bandara, assistant director of the Disaster Managment Centre of Ratnapura, said operations are being conducted to evacuate those trapped in these areas by the Ratnapura Disaster Management Centre as well as DMC units of the Ratnapura area secretariats.
He noted that the Navy and Air Force will also be assisting in these operations. He added that the water level of the Kalu Ganga has increased to about six metres.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre says the NBRO has issued a landslide alert for the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts. Media spokesperson of the DMC Lal Sarath Kumara, speaking to Newsfirst, said the NBRO has also included Baduraliya, Palinda Nuwara and Walallawaita from the Kalutara district, in the landslide warning owing to heavy rains in the area.
The DMC has requested that all residents remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, Nuwara Eliya district secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said spill gates of Laxapana, Castlereagh, Norton and Ihala Kotmale reservoirs have been opened.
