Midwives ‘detained’ in labour room of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital

The Government Midwifery Services Association says that a group of midwives has been detained in the labour room of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.

Association Chair Devika Kodithuwakku said that the detained midwives did not receive any water or food on Wednesday night.

“A situation was reported where a group of midwives have been trapped in a labour room of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital,” she said. “Therefore, on Wednesday the officers from the midwives of the Peradeniya General Hospital implemented a strike action against the hospital’s director. Subsequent to this strike action, the chairman of the the Government Midwifery Services Association, myself, several officers and the director of the hospital held a meeting in order to discuss the matter. The director of the hospital says that if he is to be removed from the administration, the officers from the family health services must also resign. The hospital director did not receive any circulation stating that officers from the family health services must work under the administration of the nursing staff.”
