Relief efforts are underway after earth slips, landslides and floods brought on by the extreme weather conditions, ravaged several districts in the country.
News1st’s Shane Silva is at the weather centre with the latest news on the disaster situation. The Disaster Management Centre says over 44,000 people have been affected by adverse weather conditions experienced over the past several days and the resulting landslides, earth slips and flooding.
Assistant Director at the DMC, Pradeep Kodippili, said numerous areas in the Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Gampaha, Colombo, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Kegalle Districts have been affected.Twenty three (23) people have been killed in various incidents caused by the extreme weather while one person has been reported missing. Close to 800 homes have been damaged.
The Kalutara District is the worst affected by the heavy rains.
