Fishermen in the Puttalam estuary area staged a demonstration on Sunday against a project to lay a new electric line from the Norochcholai Power Plant across the estuary.

The fishermen used boats to reach the Crocodile Island, where the demonstration was staged.  They said that the estuary is at risk if electricity posts are erected in the surrounding islands.

Several Navy boats were also seen in the waters in the area. Sri Lanka Navy personnel subsequently arrived at the island and held a discussion with the demonstrating fishermen in a bid to get them to leave the island.

An official attached to construction on the island responded to the questions posed by the demonstrators. The demonstrators then left the island.

An argument arose between the fishermen and two officials who had visited the village.

An official arrived at the scene and provided an explanation to the situation.

Later, K.A. Bais, mayor of the Puttlam municipal council, met with the demonstrators.
