Extensive investigations have been launched into the assault on a police officer carried out by an unidentified group of individuals in Dodamgoda in Kalutara.

The police officer was assaulted at about 8 p.m. Friday in the Bombuwala area in Dodamgoda while he was on his way to work.

The police said the assaulted officer was assigned to duties at the Kottawa checkpoint on the Southern Expressway.

The group that arrived in a cab had assaulted the police officer, who was arriving to work in his car, and subsequently had fled the area.

The injured police officer was later admitted to the Nagoda Hospital in Kalutara for treatment.

Police media spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that two special police teams have been assigned to carry out investigations into the incident.

Newsfirst inquired if there was a connection between this assault and the recent argument that took place between a politician and a police officer at the Kottawa entrance to the Southern expressway.

SSP Rohana responded, saying that investigations have been launched in this regard.
