Maithripala Sirisena: smoking and the bigger picture

Minister of  Health Maithripala Sirisena notes that he will continue the fight to expand the health warning displayed on cigarette packets. The Minister of Health made this statement at an event held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo today, to celebrate World No Tobacco Day.

Minister also said: “Two hundred and twenty five (225) Members of Parliament support the gazette notification which called for a health warning which covers 80% of the cigarette packet. The intelligent people of this country are asking us as to how this was reduced to 60 percent. At a time when we are celebrating World No Tobacco Day, we need to clearly state that we will continue this fight.”

He added: “I am ready to face any challenge and suffer any personal loss. As a government we have a responsibility about the lives of our people. On such  (an) issue we are with the people and not with organisations. We need to clearly state this…”
