Remains of a helicopter found on the seabed off the coast of Chalai in Mullaitivu have been entrusted to the Sri Lanka Air Force for further examination.

Navy Media Spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya says the remains of the chopper were taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour.

Navy divers discovered the remains of the helicopter on May 24.

The parts were discovered on the seabed about 1 nautical mile eastwards off the coast of Chalai in Mullaitivu.

Cdr. Warnakulasuriya said, “a group of divers from the Northern Naval Command on the ship Rana Gaja, discovered parts of a helicopter on the seabed. The find was made in the eastern sea off the coast of Chalai. The parts have been taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour for now. We hope to conduct further inquiries.”

The Sri Lanka Air Force Media Spokesperson says that the parts had been identified as those belonging to a helicopter.

He added that owing to the degraded state of the parts, they have been unable to ascertain whether the chopper belonged to the SLAF.

The SLAF media spokesperson noted that further inquiries are being conducted.
