The chief suspect arrested in connection with the recent kidnapping of two police officers and the subsequent murder of one of them, was killed in a shoot-out with the police on Sunday.

The police say that while two more persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, investigations are underway to apprehend another suspect.

The two police officers had been abducted by an unidentified group while on duty  in the Muththettugala area on the Kurunegala – Dambulla road on May 5. The body of one of the abducted police officers was discovered in the Ranawana area in Kurunegala.

The police recently released to the media a sketch of one of the suspect’s and security camera footage obtained of thefts at filling stations in Narammala and Weweldeniya.

The chief suspect was arrested by the police while riding a motorcycle on the Kandy – Mahiyangana road via Teldeniya, on Saturday. Police say that a gun went off while the police were arresting the suspect adding that the suspect’s daughter who was travleling with him was injured and hospitalised.

The suspect and crime investigation officers had gone to the Kalugala area in Ududumbara in search of the weapon used in the murder following information revealed by the suspect during interrogation.

The deceased thirty-two-year old Kahadawala Arachchige Tharusha Niluka, was a resident of Heiyyanthuduwa in Biyagama. Police say that he had moved to the Rangala area in Ududumbara five days ago.

Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana stated the following in this regard:

“They finished recording a statement from him at 6:30 Sunday morning. You may remember that there was a magazine at the scene of the crime. A group of officers of the Criminal Investigations Department including a police inspector, accompanied the suspect to the Kalugala area in Ududumbara in search of the weapon to which this magazine belonged. The suspect pointed it out to us and we found the weapon at 6:30 a.m. We found the gun without the magazine. The magazine was at the scene of the crime and we found the weapon. Upon finding the weapon a grenade in close proximity to the location was hurled at the officers of the CID at which point one of the officers fired at the suspect, killing him.”

The Police added that a Police Inspector and a Sergeant of the Criminal Investigations Department, were injured in the incident. The police added that the uniforms the suspects had taken from the officers had been burnt inside a house in Thimbirigaskatuwa, Katana.

SSP Ajith Rohana said

“They had taken the police officers’ uniforms to this location and had burnt them. However, we found the police emblem on one of the uniforms. The police emblem had not been burnt. In addition we also discovered several buttons.”

The police media spokesperson further clarified the series of events that led to the murder of the police officer.

The Police Media Spokesperson further added,

“They had been in the vehicle traveling towards Dambulla after the theft at the filling station in Narammala. As I mentioned before, there was a woman here who had had an argument with her husband. While this woman was walking towards the police officers, maybe the persons in the van thought that they could get her into the van since she was a woman travelling alone at night. That is why they had gone that way, turned and stopped. At this point they had decided that if the two police officers stopped them, they would take them into the vehicle. The police duly stopped the vehicle, so they kidnapped them, took them to the jungle, and this suspect murdered constable Chandana Sampath.”
