Three elephants which had fallen into an agrarian well in the Kollongolla area in Kekiraawa, were rescued by wildlife officials on Tuesday.
An elephant and two calves who are believed to have ventured into the area in search of food and water had fallen into the unprotected agrarian well.
The elephants were rescued by Kekirawa wildlife officials and officials of the Kekirawa Divisional Secretariat with the aid of a backhoe.
Our correspondent stated that the elephants were released to the Kalaawewa Reserve.
Residents however allege that elephants continue to stray into their villages due to ineffective electric fences erected around the Kalawewa Reserve.
