Killing of Peliyagoda Councillor: Five police teams to conduct investigations

UPFA Councillor of the Peliyagoda Urban Council, Chamila Sandaruwan was found shot dead on Monday morning inside a vehicle. The shooting had occurred at about 11.15 a.m. on Monday.

The Police Media Spokesperson says that an individual who accompanied the Urban Councillor is in a critical condition and is receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo.

The Police Media Spokesperson says that the shooting was carried out by suspects travelling on a motorcycle who had then fled the scene. He added that five police teams will are conducting investigations into this incident.

The shooting had occurred about 100 metres from the Tire Junction on the Old Kandy Road towards Kelaniya.

UPFA Councillor of the Peliyagoda Urban Council contested the local government polls in 2011 and was placed sixth in the electorate.

A married man, he was twenty-three years old at the time of his killing. Our cameras captured footage of several empty shell casings at the scene of the shooting. The magisterial inquest was conducted by Mahara Chief Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri.

The Judicial Medical Officer at the Ragama Teaching Hospital, Priyanjith Perera, also visited the crime scene. The body of UPFA Peliyagoda Urban Councillor Chamila Sandaruwan, was taken to the Ragama Teaching Hospital on Monday evening for the post-mortem examination.

On the night of January 5, 2013, UPFA Member of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha, Hasitha Madawala was gunned down in front of his home in Waragoda, Kelaniya. Madawala was shot as he alighted from his vehicle and was about to enter his house. He had served as a member of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha since 2006.
