Seven officers of the Kandaketiya Police who were arrested in connection with the death of a suspect who died while in remand custody at the Badulla Prison, have been remanded until May 23

The seven police officers were produced in court on Sunday where the magistrate also ordered that they be produced at an identification parade on May 16.

Five persons were arrested on May 7 on suspicion of digging for treasure in the Ketawatta Reserve in Meegahakivula.

Eighteen-year-old Sadun Malinga who was among the suspects remanded, was taken ill and passed away while being treated at the Badulla Hospital on May 9.

The facts contained in the report of the Judicial Medical Officer who examined the suspect were presented to the media by the police on Sunday.

Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana said:

“The doctor’s report says that the cause of death was internal injuries caused to the organs as a result of assault.”

Commissioner General of Prisons, Chandraratne Pallegama, says that prior to his death, the suspect had given a statement to prison officials that he had been assaulted by the police.

While the remains of the deceased are now lying at his home, his family claims that the group was initially arrested while on their way to purchase a three-wheeler.

One of the family member’s speaking on the incident said:

“It was at around 5.30 on the 7th that they received a call about a three-wheeler for sale. At around 12.30 my father received a call saying that the boys have been taken by the police.”

Speaking further, Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana said,
A Sub Inspector, four constables, a member of the Civil Defence Force and a police assistant have been arrested. We will not in any instance cover-up crimes even if they are committed by the police. We will definitely take action in this case.
The final rites of Sadun Malinga are to be observed on Monday.
