The Criminal Investigations Department and two other police teams have launched broad investigations into the kidnapping of two police officers from Kurunegala and the subsequent murder of one.
According to the police, investigations are being conducted based on the statements provided by the police officers who managed to escape the clutches of his captors.
Two police officers who were on duty in close proximity to the Kurunegala town on May 5 were abducted and one officer was shot dead. One officer managed to escape his captors and was later admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The police had obtained a number of statements from the officer who survived this ordeal.
Although investigations have been launched by the Criminal Investigations Department as well as several other police teams, no information has been revealed as yet on the identity of the abductors.
Meanwhile, information has also come to light about a theft carried out in a van at a filling station located in the Uyanwatte area in Narammala, a few hours prior to the abduction.
The group had proceeded to break the windows of the filling station and steal a number of fuel cans as well. According to an employee of the filling station, the CCTV cameras at the station had malfunctioned due to the rainy weather experienced during the day.
When we inquired about the incident from the Police Media Spokesperson’s Office, they noted that although there is a proximity in the times at which the two crimes took place there is a disparity on the nature of the vans that were involved.
