The Ella – Wellawaya Road has been closed until further notice due to the threat of landslides. Assistant Director of the Badulla District of the Disaster Management Centre E.M.L. Udayakumara said that heavy rainfall in the area resulted in the closure of the road.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre noted that if the heavy rainfall persists during the next twenty four hours, there is a threat of landslides in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Badulla districts.
When contacted by News1st, a spokesperson attached to the Met Department said that the inclement weather over the country will continue for the next two days.
Vehicular movement along the Ella – Wellawaya Road came to a standstill on Thursday night following an earth slip near the 19th Mile Post. The road has been shut down for vehicular traffic until further notice.
Meanwhile, the extreme weather hampered train services along the upcountry railway line.
The Nawalapitiya Railway Control Unit said due to the collapse of earth embankments the Udarata Menike and the Podi Menike trains had to be stopped at two points.
Furthermore, train services along the Haputale-Diyatalawa and Ohiya-Idalgashinne railway track were also disrupted owing to the extreme weather. In Kandy, several roads in Peradeniya were inundated following the heavy rainfall experienced in the area.
