Eighty-One (81) persons have been killed in 65 motor accidents during the past ten days, since April 10.
The remains of the five persons who died after their van fell in to the Detagamuwa Tank in Kataragama were taken to their residence in Katugastota.
Members of the same family met with this accident on Saturday, while they were on their way on a pilgrimage to Kataragama.
The group of victims who were residents of the Mullegama area in Ambetanne, Kandy had met with the accident when the van they were travelling in plunged into the Detagamuwa Tank at around 4.30 Saturday morning.
Six persons were in the ill-fated van and only a nine-year-old survived the accident.
Meanwhile, the funeral of the ten victims who died when the tractor they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into the ZD canal in Aralaganwila.- will be held on Monday at the family burial grounds.
Furthermore, two persons were killed in an accident in the Beehalpola area in Narammala on Saturday.
The accident was a result of a collision involving a jeep and a three-wheeler. Seven persons, including three children had been travelling in the three-wheeler at the time of the accident.
A ninety-year-old woman and her fifty-year-old son were victims of the accident. One other person who was travelling in the three-wheeler, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, two persons were admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Base Hospital, while two others have been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The driver of the jeep has been taken in to custody in connection with the accident. Our correspondent reported that the remains of the deceased were handed over to relatives following the postmortem examination.
