Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene says that he intends to develop Agarwood, locally known as Wallapatta as a crop.
He made this statement at an event held in Matara on Tuesday.
This event was held at the District Secretariat Office in Matara to present the awards to the winners of the best house hold unit under the Divi Neguma scheme.
“The government intends to expand the productions of Wallapatta, we intend to expand it as a crop. Countries like Thailand, and India are already doing this with Walapatta. We are intending to develop the crop in this area. The Wallapatta plant grows in the same weather conditions that a rubber plant grows in. This plant can be grown legally and there will be no legal restrictions. There are 18 types of Wallapatta, but out of the 18 varieties only 2 types can be taken to use, but today people cut all these plants.”
