Supreme Court dismisses appeal by police officers sentenced to death

The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal made by four police officers including the OIC of the Angulana police station who were handed down the death sentence.

The Supreme Court endorsed the decision made by the Colombo High Court.

The appeal was taken up before a panel consisting of justices Shirani Thilakawardena, Chandra Ekanayake, Sathya Hettige, Priyasad Depp and Eva Wanasundara.

The defendants were handed the death sentence by the Colombo High Court upon conviction of charges which included the murder of two youth, Nimesh Tharanga Fernando and Dhanushka Udayakantha Aponsu on August 12, 2009, kidnap of the two individuals as well as conspiring to commit murder.

The convicts include the former OIC of the Angulana police, a police sergeant, a constable and a civil security personnel.
