Quick thinking from a Ukrainian Premier League player has helped save the life of an opponent after he cleared his airway following a sickening knee to the head.
Dynamo Kiev captain Oleg Gusev was knocked unconscious after a brutal but unintentional knee to the head by Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk goalkeeper Denys Boyko.
The Ukrainian international fell to the ground and was in danger of swallowing his tongue when midfielder Jaba Kankava rushed to his aid, flipping him around and clearing his airway.
Other players and medical staff rushed to Gusev’s aid and he eventually regained consciousness while still on the field but was stretchered off and taken to a nearby hospital.
He reportedly suffered a broken jaw and concussion, with doctors claiming Kankava’s actions almost definitely helped save his opponent’s life.
A 19-year-old footballer in Jordan died from a lack of oxygen after swallowing his tongue in November.
Play continued after Gusev was taken from the field with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk taking out the dramatic encounter 2-0.
