Additional Elections Commissioner R.M.A.L. Ratnayake says that Saturday’s voting was peaceful.

Speaking to Newsfirst, he said that the first result could be announced by midnight.

R.M.A.L. Ratnayake also said: “voting today was peaceful. There were no notable problematic situations that were reported. There were no incidents that dirupted the voting process. The counting of postal votes is already underway. Following the counting of votes, we hope to announce the first result by around midnight. “

He added: ”We especially wish to request candidates and their campaigners not to loiter at counting centres and if candidates have been authorised to visit their respective counting centres, that they do so non-intrusively, and for the others to remain at their homes and prepare to witness the results as they are announced.”
