Preparations underway as Provincial Council Elections draw near

After a hectic forty nine days of campaigning, tomorrow is D-Day for candidates and voters, at the Western and Southern Provincial Council Elections.

Five million eight hundred and ninety eight thousand four hundred and twenty eight people are eligible to vote, to elect 155 councillors for both provincial councils. Preparations are well underway with officials being deployed to the individual districts and polling stations.

Ballot boxes were issued commencing from 10 o’clock Friday morning to polling stations in the Colombo District.

Candidates from eighteen (18) registered political parties and eleven (11) independent groups are contesting the Western Provincial Council Poll from the Colombo District.

Candidates from thirteen registered political parties and nine independent groups are contesting the Western Provincial Council Poll from the Gampaha District.

Ballot boxes for polling stations in the Kalutara District were also issued on Friday morning.

Candidates from fourteen registered political parties and four independent groups are contesting the Southern Provincial Council election from the Galle District.

Ballot boxes were also distributed to polling stations in the Matara District on Friday morning.

Candidates from fourteen registered political parties and five independent groups are contesting the Southern Provincial Council Poll from the Matara District.

Ballot boxes were also issued on Friday to polling stations in the Hambantota District.

Candidates from nine registered political parties and four independent groups are contesting the Southern Provincial Council election from the Hambantota District.

The police, meanwhile, note that security has been heightened in view of Saturday’s Provincial Council Elections..

The police say that 920 police patrols have been deployed, with each patrol covering three to four polling stations.Furthermore, the police added that steps have been taken to assign armed police officers for each of the polling stations.
